Ingredients:
- 500g shredded phyllo dough or kunafa dough
- 200g unsalted butter, melted
- 300g mozzarella cheese, shredded (or Akkawi/Nabulsi cheese, soaked to remove salt)
- 1 cup sugar
- ½ cup water
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp rose water or orange blossom water
- Optional: crushed pistachios for garnish
How to Make It:
- Prepare the Dough: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Place the shredded phyllo dough in a large bowl and mix with the melted butter until well coated.
- Layer the Dough: Press half of the dough into a greased baking dish. Spread the shredded cheese evenly over the dough, then cover with the remaining dough.
- Bake the Kunafa: Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
- Make the Syrup: While the kunafa is baking, prepare the syrup. In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Add rose water or orange blossom water at the end.
- Add the Syrup: Once the kunafa is out of the oven, immediately pour the warm syrup over it, ensuring even coverage.
- Serve: Garnish with crushed pistachios and serve warm.
