Biryani

 


Overview:

Biryani is a flavorful and aromatic rice dish originating from the Indian subcontinent. It's typically made with basmati rice, mixed with spices, meat (like chicken, mutton, or beef), and sometimes vegetables.

Origin:
India/Pakistan

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 500g chicken or mutton
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons biryani masala
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh mint and coriander leaves for garnish
  • 1/4 cup cooking oil or ghee
  • 4 cups water
  • Saffron threads soaked in milk (optional)

How to Make It:

  1. Cook the Rice: Boil the rice in salted water until it’s half-cooked. Drain and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Meat: In a pot, heat oil or ghee. Sauté the onions until golden brown, then add garlic, ginger, and chopped tomatoes. Cook until the tomatoes are soft. Add the meat, yogurt, biryani masala, turmeric, chili powder, and salt. Cook until the meat is tender.
  3. Layering: In a large pot, layer half of the rice, followed by the meat mixture, and then the remaining rice. Top with saffron milk, mint, and coriander leaves.
  4. Dum Cooking: Cover tightly and cook on low heat for about 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  5. Serve: Fluff up the rice and serve hot with raita (yogurt dip).
